TRANSPORTING YOUR COLLECTIBLE OR CLASSIC  CAR
        by Lawson Christenbury

There are literally hundreds of car hauling companies. Some are great, some are good and  some are risky.  Do your homework!

Selecting a company:  It is recommended that you contact the Better Business Bureau in the city in which the car transport  company is located to inquire about the company's service history.  Recommendations by van line companies is a good source as are other hobbyists or car owners.

The web site ProAutoTransport provides a listing of auto transport companies by location.

Obtaining a quote:  Check the yellow pages, ads in car magazines, fellow hobbyist and/or van lines for the names of car  movers. You will need to "talk" to several before making your selection.  Be prepared to answer questions like:

  • origin/destination
  • approximate date of pickup
  • description of vehicle
  • type of service desired (door-to-door Vs, terminal-to-terminal
  • type of transport (enclosed trailer Vs open)
Contract:  As always, read the contract carefully, do not rely on any verbal promises from the transport company - in the case of a    dispute the contract will be binding.  Check the  payment  requirements (e.g., full payment in advance Vs partial payment (usually 10-25% of total cost) -  with balance due upon delivery Payment by Cashiers check, cash credit card or?

Insurance:  Your vehicle should be insured against damage and theft by the car  transport company - ask for a copy of insurance coverage.  Check for a damage deductible?

Pick-up and Delivery dates:  Agree on the estimated pick-up and  delivery dates.(a 3-day window should be acceptable).  Does the contract waive a cancellation fee if the car is not picked up as scheduled?

Inspection Report:  There should be an Original Inspection Report prepared by the transport company.  Pre-existing damages, mileage and car condition should be detailed.  Upon delivery you  will need to perform a through inspection of the vehicle's condition.   Note any exceptions and be sure that the driver signs it.
